Philanthropy
Sigma Kappas on campus
Sigma Kappas at MIT engage in philanthropy & service throughout the school year. Every fall, we raise money to support Alzheimer’s disease research by hosting Sigma Kappa Late Night: an exciting, talent show-style competition for student groups across campus.
In addition to supporting our philanthropy through Late Night, we also directly support the environmental and gerontology-related causes we believe in by Walking to End Alzheimer’s, cleaning up the esplanade, planting flowers around campus, and writing letters to seniors in our community.
Here is a breakdown of the five philanthropic initiatives that Sigma Kappa supports:
Alzheimer’s Association
Sigma Kappa added an emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease research to its gerontology program in 1984. Every year, we participate in the Greater Boston Walk to End Alzheimer’s—it’s a wonderful way to spend time with other SKs while fundraising and raising awareness for a cause that’s important to us.
Inherit the earth
Inherit The Earth is a national service initiative encouraging collegians, alumnae and citizens to improve their local environments. For us, that means acts of service around our community like planting flowers and cleaning up the Charles River Esplanade .
Gerontology
In 1954, Sigma Kappa became the first sorority to recognize the need for continued comprehensive work on the study of aging and the needs of the elderly population. We continue to support this cause through initiatives like writing cards and making decorations for local nursing homes.
Maine seacoast mission
In 1918, the Maine Seacoast Mission was chosen as Sigma Kappa’s first national philanthropy in honor of the sorority’s founding in Maine. The Maine Seacoast Mission supports food security and infrastructure for the coastal & island communities of Maine.
Sigma Kappa Foundation
For over 50 years, the Sigma Kappa Foundation has supported & funded the leadership, scholarship and philanthropic initiatives that reflect the values and spirit of Sigma Kappa, and has provided emergency funding to Sigma Kappas in need.
